Trees play a crucial role in our environment. They help to regulate the climate, provide habitats for wildlife, and absorb harmful emissions from the air. In fact, it is estimated that once a tree is matured it can remove about 22 kilograms of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere per year.
Not only do trees help to clean the air, but they also provide us with oxygen. They help to cool the planet by providing shade and evapotranspiration (the process by which water is evaporated from leaves and then transpired back into the atmosphere). And, they can help to prevent flooding and soil erosion.
However, tree planting can only be effective if we respond to the needs of and with the full engagement and consent of indigenous peoples and the local communities in a way that respects their cultural and ecological rights. Our sustainability partner, Trees4Travel, has carefully selected reforestation projects that are always people-centred, supporting the social and economic conditions and ensuring they are compatible with the restoration and conservation of Earth’s forests.
