Since coming to life in 1986, Howard Park Wines has elegantly grown into Western Australia’s biggest family-owned boutique winery, bringing together an extensive range of beautiful handcrafted wines from the state’s two principal fruit-growing regions: the Great Southern and the world-famous Margaret River.
Although Howard Park is renowned for producing exquisite Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon, the winery aims to yield excellent wines across all varieties, including Chardonnay, Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc and Méthode Traditionelle sparkling wines. This is thanks to the different soil characteristics of the winery’s multiregional vineyards. Howard Park’s specialist portfolio offers visitors one of the most comprehensive wine-tasting experiences in the state.
Adding to your travelling-and-tasting experience is Howard Park Wines’ magnificent cellar door. Completed in 2000, the spacious building showcases Australian contemporary design fused with the traditional feng shui principles, combining to deliver a warm and serene ambience for tasting – and buying – these Aussie wines. The year of its completion, the cellar door took home the prize for the commercial category from the Royal Australian Institute of Architects.
Howard Park welcomes visitors to the cellar door and tasting room seven days a week from 10am to 5pm (except for Good Friday, Christmas Day and Boxing Day). If you bring a packed lunch, you can enjoy a picnic on the winery’s beautiful grounds, which have also played host to the world’s largest short-film festival, Tropfest. You’ll find Howard Park Wines 6 kilometres north-east of Cowaramup – or approximately three hours’ drive from Perth. Wine enthusiasts may want to combine a trip here with a visit to nearby Vasse Felix, the Margaret River’s first wine estate.
