It’s not often you come across a public park in an indoor shopping centre, but that’s exactly what you’ll find on the top floor of The Core shopping complex in downtown Calgary. Rain or shine, locals and visitors alike enjoy year-round access to this light and airy urban oasis – perfect for a bit of relaxation after shopping or a day of sightseeing.
The state-of-the-art Devonian Gardens first opened in 1977 to international praise, fast becoming a unique and much-loved part of urban life for Calgarians. By 2008, however, the gardens were a little worn and in need of a pick-me-up, prompting a four-year closure for renovations to once again breathe life into Calgary’s only indoor public park.
Visitors can now enjoy meandering along walkways surrounded by 550 tropical trees, koi ponds, water features and even a living green wall. Natural light floods in through skylights and floor-to-ceiling glass walls, making it ideal for soaking up the warmth and ambience of the sun and nature even during the coldest of Canadian winters or the rainiest of days. Little ones can let loose in the colourful indoor playground; that is, if you can lure them away from the ponds’ fish.
Devonian Gardens sits on the fourth floor of The Core shopping centre, where you can shop 'til you drop at more than 160 stores featuring luxury and brand-name fashions, beauty products, jewellery, homeware and food. The closest CTrain station is 3rd Street SW. Nearby attractions include the grand Hudson’s Bay downtown department store, Calgary Tower for panoramic views of the city and its surrounds and national historic site Calgary City Hall.
