Itinerary

Experience the ultimate Western Australian road trip on this 16-day self-drive adventure from Perth to Broome. Travel by campervan through a landscape of striking contrasts—from the limestone Pinnacles and wildflower-filled national parks to the turquoise waters of Ningaloo Reef and the ancient gorges of Karijini. Along the way, discover charming coastal towns, meet wild dolphins, snorkel coral reefs, and witness the magic of the Staircase to the Moon. This journey blends nature, freedom, and unforgettable moments across WA’s most iconic destinations.

Travel along the scenic Indian Ocean Drive toward Cervantes, passing through Lancelin, known for its massive sand dunes and adventure sports. Cervantes is the gateway to the Pinnacles Desert in Nambung National Park, where spring wildflowers put on a spectacular show. Along the shoreline, enjoy pristine white beaches ideal for swimming and snorkelling. The town, founded in 1962 to support the crayfishing industry, is famous for its fresh crayfish—so be sure to indulge!
Suggest staying 1 night in Cervantes

Continue north along the final stretch of Indian Ocean Drive to Geraldton, the windsurfing capital of WA. This vibrant coastal city offers a modern foreshore with shopping, dining, and lively entertainment.
Suggest staying 1 night in Geraldton

Day 3 Geraldton - Kalbarri (155km)
Start your day in Geraldton’s West End with coffee and breakfast before heading to Kalbarri. Explore Kalbarri National Park, home to 400-million-year-old river gorges, dramatic coastal cliffs, and the iconic Nature’s Window. Enjoy hiking trails, wildflowers in season, and fresh seafood at local eateries. Don’t miss Finlay’s microbrewery for a relaxing evening.
Suggest staying 1 night in Kalbarri

Day 4-5 Kalbarri - Monkey Mia (399km)
Drive into the Shark Bay World Heritage Area, stopping at Hamelin Pool to see the world’s oldest living fossils—stromatolites. Visit Shell Beach, made entirely of tiny white shells, and Eagle Bluff for panoramic ocean views. Arrive in Monkey Mia, world-renowned for its wild bottlenose dolphins that visit the shore daily. Learn more at the Dolphin Centre or join a wildlife cruise or kayak tour to spot dolphins and dugongs.
Note: Swimming with or touching dolphins is prohibited by law. A visitor fee applies and is payable directly.
Suggest staying 2 nights in Monkey Mia

Make an early start as you head to the tropical food bowl of Carnarvon today, the largest and one of the most accessible fringing reefs on Earth. Take your tastebuds on a culinary journey as you sample fresh local produce from seafood to fruit and vegetables, directly from plantations and farms, or at weekly markets (depending on the time of year). Pack a picnic and relax at Carnarvon Fascine or Rocky Pool, a classic Aussie waterhole.
Suggest staying 1 night in Carnarvon

Day 7 Carnarvon - Coral Bay (237km)
Your journey today will take you to the seaside town of Coral Bay, the only place that provides direct access to Ningaloo Reef. You can snorkel directly from the beach, with safe swimming and snorkeling spots available year round. Depending on the time of year you visit, you can watch or even swim with the gentle whale sharks - the largest fish in the ocean, humpback whales, graceful manta rays, or see the turtles nesting.
Suggest staying 1 night in Coral Bay

Day 8-9 Coral Bay - Exmouth (153km)
Head north to Exmouth today, located at the northern tip of the Ningaloo Reef, another great place where you can swim with the whale sharks. You will find the clearest turquoise waters and the world’s largest fringing reefs at the World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Reef, a paradise for dolphins, manta rays, turtles, humpback whales and of course the whale shark. Or venture out to Cape Range National Park, with its breathtaking canyons, limestone ranges, unspoilt coastline and the red canyon of Yardie Creek.
Suggest staying 2 nights in Exmouth

Day 10-11 Exmouth - Karijini National Park (659km)
Today make your way to Karijini National Park, where you will witness one of Western Australia’s most spectacular natural attractions. You will be in absolute awe with the stunning landscape as it surrounds you when you arrive at Karijini National Park. Explore the ancient landscapes of gorges, crystal clear rock pools, emerald green waterfalls and tunnels of marbled rock and boulders. Please note that National Park entry fees apply and must be purchased directly from the Department of Parks and Wildlife.
Suggest staying 2 nights in Karijini National Park

Discover the Dampier Archipelago’s rich marine biodiversity and explore Burrup Peninsula’s ancient rock art. Between March and October, visit Hearsons Cove to witness the Staircase to the Moon—a stunning natural phenomenon.
Suggest staying 1 night in Dampier or Burrup Peninsula

Stop at historic towns like Roebourne, Cossack, and Point Samson for local art, history, and fresh seafood. In Port Hedland, enjoy fishing, crabbing, or seasonal whale watching. Follow the Cultural and Heritage Trail or visit local museums to learn about the town’s rich past.
Suggest staying 1 night in Port Hedland.

Day 14-16 Port Hedland - Broome (609km)
Depart early and stop at Eighty Mile Beach for a picnic and stunning coastal views. Arrive in Broome, a thriving town home to pearls, and the 22km-long white-sand beach at Cable Beach, and a dramatic war history. Take a stroll through the town and make sure you visit the wildly popular Matso’s Brewery, famous for its locally brewed mango beer, or enjoy the magical sunset over Cable Beach.
