Queenstown is a small town, but packed with a huge variety of accommodation, from petite luxury hotels to backpacker joints, self-catering apartments and luxury ski lodges. International hotel chains are also represented. Many people like to stay in town, since restaurants, shops, bars and many top attractions are within walking distance. More expensive properties generally hug the lakeshore and take advantage of mountains views.
Glenorchy Road, and Kingston Road beyond the airport and Kawarau Falls, are beyond the town centre but have lovely lodges and rental apartments with fine lake views. If you want a more tranquil getaway, consider staying at Arrowtown, a charming colonial-era village 20 kilometres out of town, or at Glenorchy at the opposite end of Lake Wakatipu, which has a country-style hotel, lodge, backpackers’ and holiday park. Top-class luxury lodges and other places to stay are also scattered about the surrounding countryside and among the vineyards of the Gibbston Valley.
