More destinations to discover
From the mountainous north and its delightful regional capital Chiang Mai to the islands of the Gulf and the Andaman Sea, Thailand has much to offer travellers seeking a taste of life and leisure beyond Bangkok. Connections between Australia and Thailand are now so good, this fascinating tropical destination can be less than half a day away.
Given Bangkok supports more than six million people, you would expect Thailand’s second-largest city to count its population in the millions. Far from it: only around 200,000 call this 800-year-old heart of northern Thailand home. Savour the history of the old walled city, explore the dramatic hillside temple, shop at the markets, or join a trek into the hills. Chiang Mai is about an hour by air from Bangkok.
This popular beach resort, about two hours south of Bangkok, offers seaside relaxation with a busy town vibe. Endorsed by the Thai royal family as a perfect holiday escape from the clamour of Bangkok, this former fishing village now boasts luxury hotels and resorts, good restaurants, good street eats, vibrant markets, and an ambience largely free of the seediness present in some other resort towns. Easily accessible by train from Bangkok – or road, if you are up for it.
If you are looking for an island escape, with some of the best beaches in the world, excellent snorkelling and great diving, then one of the many Thai islands is for you. Each has its own character, advantages and disadvantages, and accommodation options are equally diverse. On the Gulf, think Koh Samui, Koh Tao and Koh Phangan. On the ocean side, think Phuket and Koh Phi Phi among others.
