Suva Information

Suva is the capital city of Fiji, and the centre for political activity and commerce, it is located in the south-east of Viti Levu. It's been capital since 1877 and is acutally the largest city in the south-pacific region outside of New Zealand and Australia.

Suva is largely influenced by Indian culture although it is somewhat of a melting pot with Melanesian, Polynesian and European influences all playing a part also. The downtown area is a hap hazard collection of shopping areas, markets, colonial buildings, and a great collection of Indian curry places. There is a lovely wide boulevard which is cooled by ocean breezes.

Suva is not generally on the itinerary for most travelling to Fiji for leisure. However there are a some sites worth visiting if you find yourself in the capital. The iji Museum is home to a good collection of themed exhibits depicitng aspects of Fijian and South Pacific culture. Thurston Gardens is an impressive botanic gardens and is definately worth a visit if you are a plant lover. Suva also is the home of the University of the South Pacific.

Suva is usually at the centre of the political tensions that erupt from time to time in Fiji and it is therefor advisable to consult the latest travel warnings before planning a visit.
