Culture & Customs

Social courtesies are often fairly formal such as removing your shoes when entering a private home, temple or mosque. Handshaking is the usual form of greeting and dress is informal with evening dress for local men or women being unusual. Revealing clothing is acceptable however toplessness is not.

There are strong laws against jaywalking, littering and chewing gum and smoking is discouraged and illegal in enclosed public places. Beware of taboos if offering gifts, these include any products involving animals, white flowers, knives and clocks, alcohol and the number 4 may all cause offence and are best avoided. Also be aware when inviting Chinese for a meal that most are vegetarian. Tipping is not expected in Singapore and is usually frowned upon by the government with the exception of bellhops.

Singaporeans are punctual so always be on time and business cards are always exchanged when meeting for the first time. This should be held with both hands by the top corners while simultaneously receiving theirs. After studying the card place it on the table in front of you and do not write on them or show any disrespect. Smalltalk is not necessary and most business meetings get straight to the point.

Singapore is a multi-religious country with most of the key religious denominations being represented. The government promotes religious tolerance.
