Anchorage is Alaska's largest city and is located in the south of this pristine American state. The downtown streets are lined with galleries, specialty shops and outdoor displays that showcase the unique works of Alaska's finest artists.
Alaska cruises generally runs between May and September and ships often dock in Seward, a nearby fishing port with easy connections by rail, coach or tram to Anchorage.
Sights to See
An adventure and nature paradise, the award-winning trail system enables easy exploration of the surrounding landscape and observation of the native wildlife. A popular trip is the train to the Denali National Park to enjoy views across to Mt McKinley, the highest mountain in North America. Day cruises are also available on the surrounding waterways including Knik Arm, a tidal inlet. The Portage Glacier located adjacent to Turnagain Arm, 50 miles southeast of Anchorage is another popular excursion.
What's for Lunch
Seafood is definitely the thing. Try the Alaskan King Crab legs steamed and served with vegetables.
If you see only one thing...
A visit to Anchorage wouldn't be complete without sighting a grizzly bear, which can be arranged through a short floatplane trip.
Summer comes to an end with the onset of 'termination dust,' the local term for the first dusting of snow over the city indicating that winter is coming.
For curiosity check out one of the quality furriers around town and you may fall in love with a beaver scarf, fox coat or chinchilla stole.
