Nicknamed the 'Coathanger' for its striking arch design, the Sydney Harbour Bridge soars 134 metres above the water and is the centrepiece of the city's New Year's Eve celebrations. However, there is much more to this 80-year-old structure than the annual fireworks display. Step back into the bridge's history at the Pylon Lookout, which features a fascinating museum and viewing platform. For a more active experience, you could walk or cycle across the bridge to the other side, or suit up for the bridge climb and conquer the summit.
Culture lovers can't help but be seduced by the sleek white sails of the Sydney Opera House. One of the 20th century's most distinctive and unusual buildings, the Opera House continues to delight with nightly shows from some of the world's top performing arts companies, including Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Opera Australia and Sydney Theatre Company.
By day, you can simply sit on the steps and watch the world go by, or take a guided tour to learn more about the building's history. As the sun sets, enjoy a drink with a view at the famous Opera Bar.
