Itinerary

This journey is all about South Island’s greatest hits. We start in Christchurch and head south along the coast to Oamaru and Dunedin, where heritage meets quirky charm. From there, it’s into Fiordland – Te Anau is your gateway to those jaw-dropping sounds and untouched wilderness. Next stop? Queenstown, the adventure capital, where you can go full throttle or simply soak up the alpine views with a glass of Central Otago Pinot. Then we swing past Lake Tekapo for those iconic turquoise waters and world-class stargazing before looping back to Christchurch with a camera roll full of epic landscapes. Think rugged coastlines, dramatic mountains, and serene lakes – all stitched together by some of the most scenic drives on the planet. It’s the ultimate South Island road trip, and it’s calling your name.

Day 1 Christchurch

Start your adventure in Christchurch, the gateway to Canterbury and a city where old-world charm meets modern vibes. After checking into your hotel, head out to explore the lively city centre.
Take a wander through the lush Botanic Gardens, glide along the Avon River on a classic punt, or pop into the Canterbury Museum for a dose of local history. When evening rolls around, dive into the city’s buzzing food scene – grab a bite at Riverside Market or savour Mediterranean-inspired flavours at ROCA.
Overnight: Christchurch (1 night)

Day 2 Christchurch to Oamaru (248km)

Continue your journey to Oamaru, a town that wears its history proudly. After checking into your hotel, wander through the beautifully preserved Victorian precinct where grand heritage buildings now house quirky art galleries, boutique stores, and steampunk surprises.
As evening falls, head to the coastline to watch the little kororā (blue penguins) waddle ashore – a true South Island highlight. Fancy a taste of the local scene? Oamaru is making waves with its artisan cheese and craft beer, so treat yourself to a tasting before calling it a night.
Overnight: Oamaru (1 night)

Day 3-4 Oamaru to Dunedin (113km)

Travel south to Ōtepoti Dunedin, a city that fuses Scottish roots with dramatic coastal beauty. After checking into your hotel, spend the day exploring its striking architecture – from the grand University of Otago buildings to the iconic Larnach Castle perched on the hills.
Make time for the Otago Peninsula, where rugged landscapes and rare wildlife await. Spot albatross soaring overhead, fur seals lounging on the rocks, and maybe even a penguin or two. If you’re up for a quirky detour, Baldwin Street – the world’s steepest residential road – is a must-see. Round off your day with a cosy dinner at one of Dunedin’s welcoming eateries or pubs; Salt is a local favourite with great food, friendly vibes, and both indoor and outdoor seating.
Overnight: Dunedin (2 nights)

Head inland to Te Anau, the perfect base for exploring Fiordland National Park. After checking into your hotel, stretch your legs with a peaceful lakeside walk before settling in for a comforting Italian feast at La Toscana – think wood-fired pizza and hearty pasta dishes.
The next day, take a bucket-list trip to Milford Sound. Here, sheer cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and mirror-like waters create a scene you’ll never forget. Glide through the fiord on a scenic cruise and keep your eyes peeled for seals, dolphins, and even penguins along the way.
Overnight: Te Anau (2 nights)

Day 7-9 Te Anau to Queenstown (171km)

Drive north to Tāhuna Queenstown, perched on the shores of Lake Whakatipu and framed by the majestic Southern Alps. After checking into your hotel, take a stroll through the vibrant town centre where boutique shops and buzzing eateries tempt at every turn. For a hearty feed, Flame Bar & Grill is a local favourite for steaks and ribs done right.
Over the next two days, dive into Queenstown’s legendary experiences. Craving relaxation? Book a soak at the Japanese-inspired Onsen Hot Pools – private cedar tubs with jaw-dropping views of the Shotover River. Feeling adventurous? Take your pick from bungy jumping, jet boating, or even skydiving for the ultimate adrenaline rush.
For a change of pace, head to Arrowtown for a slice of gold-mining history, or indulge in the region’s world-class Pinot Noir. Long lunch lovers will adore The Woolshed at Ayrburn – a multi-venue hotspot where wine and good times flow effortlessly.
Overnight: Queenstown (3 nights)

Leave Queenstown behind and make your way to Lake Tekapo, famous for its shimmering turquoise waters and some of the clearest night skies on Earth. After checking in, wander along the lakefront and snap that iconic shot at the Church of the Good Shepherd.
Feeling active? Hike up Mount John for sweeping views of the Mackenzie Basin. Prefer to unwind? Sink into the hot pools at Tekapo Springs and let the alpine scenery do its thing. When night falls, join a guided stargazing tour under the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve – one of the best spots on the planet for celestial magic.
Round off the day at Dark Sky Diner, where modern Kiwi flavours meet traditional Māori fare, all served with a side of lakefront views.
Overnight: Lake Tekapo (2 nights)

Today, journey from Lake Tekapo back to Christchurch, with time for a scenic stop at Rakaia Gorge to soak up those river views or a quick break in Ashburton.
Once in the city, slow things down at the Christchurch Botanic Gardens or dive into local stories at the Canterbury Museum. Fancy a little retail therapy? Head to the vibrant Re:START Mall. If the coast is calling, Sumner Beach is just a short drive away for a refreshing seaside stroll.
When it’s time to wrap up, return your hire car at Christchurch Airport and either head home or continue exploring more of New Zealand’s wonders.
Overnight: Christchurch (1 night)
