Is Air New Zealand’s innovative Economy Skycouch the Goldilocks option of airplane seating? Not just an Economy seat, not quite an individual lie-flat bed, it’s just right for small family units or couples who want a leetle more room on a long-haul flight to the Americas.

Basically Skycouch is a row of three Economy seats that combine to create a flexible space to relax and stretch out or let the kids take over as a play area. It’s completely private, as you’ll have the whole row to yourself.

The individual Skycouch seats are Economy seats with the added bonus of an additional footrest for each seat that folds to create a couch. The footrest can adjust to 60 or 90 degrees and each Skycouch passenger can choose to have their footrest up or down. Arm rests on all chairs – even the window seat – go all the way up to create a comfy couch space. There’s even an extension seat belt so you can lie down, plus bedding and pillows to complete your onboard sleep sanctuary.

Extended airplane seats
With the adjustable footrests up, the Skycouch seats on an Air New Zealand 777-200 aircraft extend to create the innovative bed structure.

Size does matter, and each seat is 43.6cm (17.2") wide with a seat pitch of 78 to 84cm (31" to 33") and 12.7cm (5") recline. The couch space adds up to 1.55m (5ft 1") in length with a depth of 74cm (29") when the cushion and footrest are combined. The setup is ideal for families with small kids or infants, couples or individual travellers who really want to stretch out and relax in their own space.

With Skycouch Economy, you’ll also enjoy all the regular features of an Air New Zealand Economy fare, such as onboard dining. A nine-inch touchscreen gives you access to hundreds of hours of inflight entertainment plus in-seat power connection and an individual USB socket allows you to stay connected.

Skycouch is available on long-haul flights to the Americas with Air New Zealand, with the option to upgrade from Economy to Economy Skycouch on flights from Australia to Los Angeles, Buenos Aires, San Francisco, Houston and Vancouver. You can book one or multiple Skycouches on your flights, or a combination of one Skycouch and an Economy seat.
