Unforgettable Mother-Daughter Moments For Mother’s Day

8 May 2016

Mothers occupy a special place in our hearts – and Mother’s Day is the perfect excuse to plan a special getaway that will remain forever in their hearts. Here are some unforgettable mother-daughter moments to be shared, and that will brighten your Mother’s Day memories for years to come.

Cruise the Danube

The waterways of Europe are the perfect setting for a mother-daughter trip to remember. So much so that Scenic has created a special guide to river cruising for those who want to travel with the most important women in their lives.

Imagine floating along the blue Danube with your mum, cocktail in hand, as pretty villages and rolling countryside slip by. Step ashore to shop up a storm in local markets, browse pretty streets and sample the local cuisine. Pamper yourselves in the onboard spa, or unwind in the yoga space.

Scenic ambassador Catriona Rowntree took her mother on a cruise of the Seine River in France and told Women’s Weekly: “It’s no wonder that now we are home, Mum says to me, ‘I feel like it was a dream. Was it real?’”

Take a Spa Break

Sure there are many spas close to home but why not go all out and head to the Six Senses Zighy Bay in Oman, designed to look like a traditional Arabian village. Stay in a villa with your own private pool, dine at the mountaintop restaurant and indulge in a treatment at the award-winning Six Senses Spa.

Try the Wonders of Oman package – three hours of bliss that begins with a sea-salt bath with fresh mint; followed by a honey, almond and date body scrub. Then follows the purifying Arabian Body Rasul treatment; polished off with a draining massage. The spa resort is only a two-hour drive from Dubai, with a sandy beach in front and the Hajar Mountains behind.

Sip Tea at the Ritz

The quintessential British experience is afternoon tea at The Ritz London. Hold court in The Palm Court, as you and your mum choose from 18 types of loose-leaf tea served in silver. Sample cucumber sandwiches and raisin scones with Cornish clotted cream, to the strains of the resident harpist.

Up the ante with a Champagne afternoon tea that also includes a glass of Champagne per person. Or get creative with the Epicurian afternoon tea, which includes six rare teas curated by Tea Master Giando Scanu, paired with morsels created especially to complement the brews.

Fun in the Sun

Each year, Queensland’s Hamilton Island hosts the Mother’s Day Classic, a fun run or walk to raise money for breast cancer research. And what better way to pay tribute to your mum than in the gorgeous surrounds of the Whitsunday Islands?

The 4.2-kilometre walk or 6.7-kilometre run around the island is open to all guests, regardless of fitness level. And participants can enjoy fruit, pastries and juice, alongside activities and entertainment after the event. There’s also the option to cool down with a massage or foot treatment at the island’s Spa wumurdaylin and Spa qualia.

Catch a Broadway Show

They say the neon lights are bright on Broadway. Take your mum to see if this is true (it is) with tickets to a show in New York’s most famous theatre district. Take your pick of classics like Les Miserables and The Lion King, or take your mum back in time with Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.

New York City is full of magical moments, so make sure you also hit Barneys New York to shop for incredible accessories, and go old-school for dinner at La Grenouille, which has been serving haute cuisine since 1962.

Travel for me is about conversations and connections. There’s nothing like setting foot in a new land and meeting people a world apart. From talking to North Sea fishermen in Norway’s Lofoten Islands to breakfast chat at a B&B in my own back yard, there’s always a story to share and a tale to tell.
