Smart Travel In 2026: Where To Start

If you’re easing back into work with a quickly filling inbox but a head still somewhere on holiday, you’re not alone. January always arrives before we’re emotionally ready, and for many businesses, travel is one of the first things that signals the year is properly underway.

If you’re easing back into work with a quickly filling inbox but a head still somewhere on holiday, you’re not alone. January always arrives before we’re emotionally ready, and for many businesses, travel is one of the first things that signals the year is properly underway.

The start of a new year is also when businesses reset. We reassess what’s working, what isn’t, and where small changes could make a meaningful difference over the months ahead.

So rather than predicting the “next big thing” in travel, we’ve taken a more practical approach. Below is a New Year’s resolution list focused on travelling smarter, more intentionally, and with fewer headaches in 2026.

This year, I will treat travel like a program, not a scramble

Too much business travel still happens reactively, driven by last-minute decisions, unclear processes or a lack of forward planning. While urgency sometimes can’t be avoided, living in that mode comes at a cost.

Late bookings cost more, limit choice and put pressure on travellers. They’re often a symptom of something bigger: unclear approvals, poor visibility, or no one actively managing the program.

This year, I will stop treating business travel like a solo sport

Too many travellers are still left to manage complex itineraries on their own, navigating policies, changes, cancellations and rebooking in isolation.

In 2026, smart travel looks more connected. Travellers, finance teams and leaders aligned. Clear policies. Real support when plans change.

This year, I will prioritise the traveller, not just the transaction

The cheapest option isn’t always the smartest. The fastest route isn’t always the best outcome.

More organisations are recognising that traveller wellbeing directly impacts performance, productivity and retention. Fatigued, frustrated travellers don’t do their best work. Smart travel considers flexibility, comfort and confidence, especially when things don’t go to plan.

This year, I will finally let go of outdated travel habits

Manual spreadsheets. Endless email chains. Guesswork approvals. If your travel process hasn’t evolved in recent years, it’s probably costing more than you realise, in time, money and goodwill. 2026 is about clarity:

  • Clear policies
  • Clear reporting
  • Clear visibility of spend
  • Clear accountability

This year, I will expect more from my travel partner

A booking tool isn’t a strategy. And technology alone doesn’t solve human problems. Smart travel is supported by people who understand your business, anticipate challenges and step in early, not after things go wrong.

That’s where working with Flight Centre Business Travel makes the difference. Not as a vendor, but as an extension of your team, helping you move from reactive travel to considered, confident decision-making.

From intention to execution: smarter travel in 2026

The most effective travel programs aren’t built on resolutions alone. They’re built on clear frameworks, aligned teams and the right support to make better decisions day after day.

That’s what turns a new year mindset into meaningful, lasting change, even once January feels very much like work again.

Smart business travel is about having dedicated people in your corner.
