Why is Switzerland the happiest country? Well, sure, Swiss chocolate helps, after all, who wouldn’t feel a little serotonin boost from a square of silky-smooth Lindt? But can high-class chocolatiers really be the reason behind an entire nation’s sense of wellbeing? According to the World Happiness Report, it’s a bit more complex than that.
In 2015,Switzerland claimed the top spot out of 158 European countries and beyond in the World Happiness Report, thanks to a mix of economic and social factors that contribute to the Swiss people's overall life satisfaction. The report considers measures such as GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, mental health, freedom to make life choices, and generosity—areas where the Swiss government has invested heavily.
For comparison, Australia ranked number 10, just behind New Zealand at number 9, with the top spots also occupied by Iceland (2), Denmark (3), Norway (4), Canada (5), Finland (6), Netherlands (7), and Sweden (8).
So what exactly makes the Swiss so content? I asked my cousin Melissa Madeira, an Australian expat living in Switzerland, how the Swiss approach their own happiness—and what national secrets might be hiding behind the natural beauty of those mountains, lakes, and immaculate public transportation that make up one of the happiest nations.
