Kadavu Islands Information
The Kadavu Islands lie about 90 kilometres south of Fiji's main island of Viti Levu. The main island in the group is Fiji's fourth largest and is known for it's wild and rugged landscape of jungle clad mountains rising up behind the idealic beaches. The island is just over 93 kilometres long and has a width ranging from just 365 metres to round 13 kilometres. The islands population is made up of Melanesians of which there are some 10,000. William Bligh is thought to be the first european visitor in 1792 on his second voyage to the Fiji Islands.
The large size of Kadavu, over 410 square kilometres, and the wild terrain mean that there are very few roads and the main method of travelling around the island is by boat. The resorts on the island generally offer boat transfers to and from the Vunisea airport. The airport is located adjacent to the main town on the island, Vunisea. The landing strip spans the narrow width of the island at this point and makes for an interesting and somewhat alarming sight coming in to land.
The central mountain ridgeline rises to over 800 metres at Mount Washington or Ndelainambukelevu. The volcanic soils of the slopes are rich in minerals and timber is harvested from the forests here and milled locally. There are also plantations of bananas and copra grown here. The island retains most of it's native rainforest and it's rich population of birds, some of which can only be found here.

The island's main attraction is the natural and unspoilt beauty of the landscape, it is considered an eco-tourism destination and is particularly popular for those looking for an authentic and non-commercialised Fiji experience. The island is known for the various outdoor activities on offer. Sea Kayaking is popular around the beautiful shorelines and is a great way to view the island from a different vantage point. On the western coast, good surfing spots provide another popular activity and there are also game and sports fishing tours on offer.
Land based activities on the island include trekking in the rainforest and bird watching. There are 4 species of birds that can only be found here including the Kadavu honeyeater, the Kadavu Faintain the Velvet Dove and the Crimson Shining Parrot. There are Fiji cultural village tours which will give visitors a taste of the real Fiji.
Scuba diving and snorkelling are also one of Kadavu's main attractions. The world renowned Great-Astrolabe Reef off the eastern shore is one of Fiji's largest and stretches half way to Suva, it is about 100 kilometre long all up. The reef is home to some astonishing hard corals in large groups and a fantastic variety of sea life. Many good dive and snorkelling sites are just a small distance by boat from Kadavu Island and have only slight currents.
