Auckland Airport (AKL) is the largest and busiest airport in New Zealand, with millions of passengers passing through its terminals every year. Some of the most frequently flown international routes to and from Auckland Airport are those travelling across the ditch from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, while the airport also services direct flights to a wide range of domestic destinations across both the North and South Island of New Zealand. Auckland Airport also connects the country with long-haul holiday hotspots across the South Pacific, Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo, Singapore and Vancouver.

There are two terminals at Auckland Airport, domestic and international. In the Domestic Terminal, you’ll find check-in counters and self-serve kiosks on the ground floor for Air New Zealand, Jetstar, Air Chathams and Barrier Air. In the International Terminal, check-in counters are also located on the ground floor, and you’ll need to make sure you have your passport and travel documents ready to go. It’s always a good idea to arrive at the airport nice and early for your flight, and to confirm check-in times directly with your airline as each may have different requirements. It’s often possible to check in for your flights online in advance via your airline’s website or app, which can be an easy way to save time at the airport on the day of travel.
Baggage allowances vary by airline and ticket class, so it’s important to confirm what’s included with your flight booking to avoid any surprises at bag drop! For more specific information on baggage limits, such as the size, weight and number of bags included in your airfare, check with your airline or ask your Travel Expert for assistance. Auckland Airport offers a number of baggage services, such as luggage wrapping and storage. Luggage wrapping services are available on the ground floor of the International Terminal and travellers can access lockers and storage options in both terminals.
There are a wide range of facilities available at Auckland Airport for your comfort, convenience and use before or after your flight.

There are lots of parking options available at Auckland Airport, including Short Stay, Park & Ride, Premium and Valet parking. Park & Ride is an affordable undercover parking option, ideal for longer stays and with a free transfer bus running between both terminals, while Standard parking provides covered and uncovered parking within walking distance of the airport terminals. For short-term stays and the most convenient access to airline check-in desks, opt for Premium parking (or Valet if you’re feeling extra fancy!).
Getting a lift to or from the airport? Convenient Pick-up and Drop-off areas are available at both terminals (in the Forecourt of the Domestic Terminal and on the ground floor of the Transport Hub for the International Terminal). Like most Pick-up and Drop-off zones, these can be busy areas, so it’s a good idea to double-check the airport’s arrivals and departures information to coordinate your pick-up or drop-off time in advance.
SkyDrive operates a convenient express shuttle between Auckland’s city centre and the airport, with services running every 30 minutes between approximately 5am and 10:30pm.
Thanks to Auckland Airport’s relatively compact size, it’s possible to walk between the Domestic and International Terminals in roughly 15 minutes by following the Green Line walkway. Don’t fancy the walk? There’s also a free inter-terminal bus service that runs every 15 minutes between 5am and 11pm.
Renting a car, campervan or motorhome is a great idea in New Zealand, with all that spectacular scenery to explore and a well-established road-tripping culture. Car rental companies, including AVIS, Budget, Europcar and Hertz, can be found just outside the Transport Hub (past the Pick-up and Drop-off zones) at Auckland Airport. Talk to your Travel Expert about organising car hire for your trip or book it yourself online before you leave.
Auckland Transport, the city’s public transport service, offers several connections to and from Auckland Airport. The AirportLink bus route runs between Auckland Airport and Puhinui Station, where it’s possible to transfer to the city’s wider transport network, and the 38 bus is also a good option. Both depart from bus stop B for the Domestic Terminal and bus stop A (in the Transport Hub) for the International Terminal. See the Auckland Transport website for up-to-date information on bus timetables and fares.
Taxi ranks are available outside door 4 of the Domestic Terminal and door 11 of the International Terminal. While any taxi company is able to drop you off at the airport, a select list of companies is licensed by Auckland Airport for passenger pick-up. Dedicated rideshare Pick-up and Drop-off zones are also located near door 2 of the Domestic Terminal and door 11 of the International Terminal.
