Frequent Flyer Explained
How do I earn points?
There are many ways to earn frequent flyer points. From flying and spending on flight tickets, to everyday activities like using partner credit cards, shopping, or booking services through affiliated programs, there are so many opportunities to maximise your spending. Flights remain the most common way to earn, with points varying based on factors like fare type, miles travelled, airline partners and your membership status. Many programs also offer tiered membership levels, where moving up unlocks greater perks and benefits, making it important to understand what’s required to maintain or upgrade your status.
To get the most value, it helps to start with a clear goal, whether that’s a destination or a specific travel class, so you can choose a program that aligns with how and where you travel. Airline alliances and partnerships can also expand your earning potential across multiple carriers, while credit cards offer another way to boost points through everyday spending. With so many options available, taking a moment to explore and compare can help you find the program that best suits your travel style and maximises your rewards.

How do I redeem points?
Redeeming frequent flyer points is generally straightforward and can be done with the help of our Travel Experts, but it’s important to be aware of key considerations such as points expiry, transfer rules, and any conditions set by the airline or its partners. Points can be used in a variety of ways, including upgrading to premium cabins, booking flights using points, or combining points with cash when you’re short of a full reward fare. Availability can be limited, with restrictions and blackout periods often applying, so flexibility can help you get better value from your points.
Beyond flights, many programs allow you to redeem points for a wide range of rewards such as hotel stays, car hire, vouchers, retail items, experiences, and even donations or travel insurance. Some programs also offer features like points pooling or transfers between family members, while others may have different rules around expiry — making it important to understand how long your points remain valid and how they can be used.
What are status credits?
Frequent flyer programs typically separate points (or miles) from status credits, with each playing a different role. While points act as a currency you can redeem for flights, upgrades and rewards, status credits are earned primarily through flying and are used to determine your membership tier within a program.
Status credits are usually calculated per eligible flight based on factors such as fare type, distance travelled, airline and your current membership level. These credits often reset within a set period, and once you accumulate enough, you’ll automatically progress to a higher tier. Higher membership levels unlock additional benefits such as extra baggage allowance, priority check-in, lounge access, upgrade priority and more, with each airline outlining how credits are earned through their own fare and distance tables.
Frequent flyer upgrades
The number of frequent flyer points required for upgrades depends on factors such as the fare type you’ve purchased and the distance you’re travelling, with more flexible or premium fares generally requiring fewer points than lower-cost tickets. Upgrades are a popular way to get more value from your points, allowing you to enjoy a higher cabin class without paying full price.
Different airlines offer their own upgrade options. For example, Virgin Australia provides UpgradeMe options, including using points, bidding for upgrades, or accessing offers available to eligible members, all subject to availability in Premium Economy or Business Class. Meanwhile, Qantas allows members to request upgrades using points on eligible fares, with the flexibility to apply upgrades close to departure and even on individual legs of a journey.
