Akubra On Tour In The Outback

20 May 2015

The Flight Centre Content Team recently had the pleasure of embarking on the kind of adventure, that for many, is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: a trip to Uluru.

Murmurs soon began to fly around the office on what to pack in order to prepare for such a momentous destination. It soon became clear; the ultimate Outback fashion accessory is surely the Akubra.

Akubra, meet Uluru, she's a beauty isn't she
Dress up your Akubra with a reptile

When buying an Akubra, you need to buy one size larger than your head size, as over time, the leather band inside hat will shrink. Lucky we told you.

Caring for an Akubra:

1. Never leave your hat out in the sun, as this will encourage the leather to shrink faster

2. Always rest your Akubra on its crown, as resting on the brim will cause the brim to distort

3. Keep your Akubra in shape by giving it a brush from time to time in an anti-clockwise direction with a soft bristled brush over a shot of steam (a kettle will do nicely)

Did you know?

• Akubras have been around for 130 years, first made in Tasmania in 1874
• Akubra hats where supplied to the Australian defence force during both World Wars
• Akubras where worn by athletes at the 1956 Olympics and have continued to make appearances in the official uniforms ever since

 So many uses...

Things they don’t tell you about the Akubra
• You feel about 20% more Australian when you wear one
• Be careful not to poke anyone at eye height with the brim of your Akubra when in a confined space
• Akubras aren’t great to sleep in when you’re on a plane
• How good you’ll look in an Akubra

Just like this guy...
