Without the help of an organised tour or lots of Ubers, getting to a lot of the USA and Canada’s must-see destinations can get quite difficult.  

That’s where a rental car and one of these iconic itineraries comes in handy.  

Take the road less travelled and opt for a road-trip in any of the USA and Canada’s most popular destinations. Encounter spectacular national parks, historical monuments, and diverse cultures as you make your way around the country at your own pace.

Extraterrestrial Highway

Distance: 756km 

Suggested Time: 2 days   

We’re sure you’ve heard of Area 51 – you know, the Nevada National Security Site area over 2 million Facebook users decided they wanted to storm in 2019 to search for extraterrestrial life. If Area 51 conspiracy theories, UFOs, and aliens are your thing, strap in for an out-of-this-world journey across Nevada’s ‘Extraterrestrial Highway’ departing Las Vegas. With highlights such as an alien themed jerky shack, the Alien Research Centre gift shop, many unique alien murals, and the outskirts of Area 51 itself, this two-day out-of-this-world adventure is one you definitely won’t want to miss!

Lake Tahoe Loop

Distance: 233km 

Suggested Time: 2 to 5 days  

Get ready to dive into the Jewel of the Sierra Nevada on this iconic route around Lake Tahoe. If you’re looking for year-round outdoor action with a side of breathtaking scenery, make sure to add this route to your bucket-list! Beginning in the “biggest little city in the world”, Reno, you’ll encounter bohemian vibes, colourful murals and a wide range of trendy shops and restaurants before departing for the star of the show – Lake Tahoe. With sandy beaches and crystal-clear water to enjoy in summer, and plenty of fresh pow to enjoy in the winter, Lake Tahoe is every outdoor-adventurer's dream. After experiencing the magical Lake Tahoe, make your way through Carson Valley and Carson City before ending your journey in the fun-loving mining town of Virginia City.

Historic Route 66

Distance: 3862km 

Suggested Time: 2 to 3 weeks 

What better way to see the best of the US than a cross-country journey along the iconic Route 66? One of the most famous roads in the whole world, Route 66 spans over 2400 miles across 8 states: Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. Stock up on the American snacks and sort your ‘USA Classics’ playlist before leaving the windy city of Chicago in pursuit of the sunshine and sand of Santa Monica. On the journey you’ll encounter everything from vintage motels and drive-in movie theatres to big cities and Western landscapes. While this road trip may require a lot of planning and preparation – we promise you it’s worth ticking off the bucket list!

The Pacific Coast Highway (PCH)

Distance: 595km 

Suggested Time: 3 – 4 days 

It’s time to turn your California dreaming into a reality with a scenic drive along the Pacific Coast Highway from Dana Point to San Francisco. Begin your journey in the small city of Dana Point, Orange County, home to the same famous surf and sun as the rest of California, but with a far more relaxed vibe. As you make your way along the PCH, you’ll encounter a number of famous stops, including Laguna Beach, Santa Monica, Malibu, Santa Barbara, Big Sur, and Santa Cruz. While it’s possible to make the full journey in a day, we don’t blame you for taking much longer with beautiful stops like these! End your journey in the famous city of San Francisco, home of the Golden gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and eclectic architecture.

East Coast USA’s Freedom, Independence and Monument Trail

Distance: 721km  

Suggested Time: 7 Days  

Begin your journey in one of America’s oldest cities, Boston, and embark on an exploration of 16 historically significant sights on the famous Freedom Trail featuring museums and meeting houses that sparked the early rumblings of the American Revolution. Make your way from Boston to Philadelphia, where the food is just as iconic as the arts and culture. With monuments such as the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, and Philadelphia Museum of Art on the itinerary, don’t forget to stock up on the Philly cheesesteaks to keep the good times rolling! After exploring the city of Brotherly Love, go full throttle to nation’s capital to get the full Freedom, Independence and Monument Trail experience. Canadian Rockies Winter, Wildlife and Natural Wonders

One of the most iconic road trips through Canada and Alaska, the Yukon Golden Circle route is a scenic mountain drive that passes through picturesque towns, alpine passes and the Alaska Panhandle. The journey begins in Whitehorse, where you’ll begin your drive to Skagway, Alaska. With stops at the Emerald Lake, Carcross Desert, and the Yukon Suspension Bridge, the journey is guaranteed to be both photo-worthy and thrilling. Take the ferry from Skagway to Haines, were you’ll be met with a fascinating gold-rush town with a wealth of activities to enjoy. Make your way back into Canada and head straight for the Kluane National Park and Reserve – the home of the highest concentration of grizzly bears in North America.
