Frequently Asked Questions

From epic mountain hikes and scenic multi-day walks to remote adventures off the beaten track, check out the travel deals above to see what types of adventure and trekking trips are currently available.

Trekking and adventure travel is available all over the world, with popular bucket-list destinations including Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Everest Base Camp in the Himalayas and Machu Picchu in Peru. But there’s plenty more where that came from! Browse the deals above to see what’s currently available and to book your next trekking or adventure escape today.

We won't lie to you, most trekking trips do require a good level of fitness to participate, particularly those at high elevation like treks to Everest Base Camp or along the Inca Trail. For more information and help finding a trekking adventure that suits your travel style and fitness level, talk to your Travel Expert.

Every trekking and adventure trip is a little bit different, but you can expect most to take about a week or two. Click on the offers above for more information and to find out how long a specific trekking trip lasts.

Absolutely, lots of trekking trips are designed to accommodate hikers of varying skill levels, from absolute beginners to certified mountain goats! Talk to your Travel Expert for more information and to book a trek that matches your skill level today.

Thick socks and comfortable hiking boots are an absolute must – and make sure you’ve worn them in, trekking in brand new boots is a rookie mistake that your feet won’t thank you for! You’ll also want to pack lots of layers, sunscreen and a rain jacket to cater for all weather while you’re out in the elements, plus any supplies and equipment specified by your tour operator.

One size doesn’t always fit all, especially when it comes to planning the perfect trekking holiday. Some of our travel deals are more flexible than others, so talk to your Travel Expert about customising your trek, adding extra nights before or after your expedition and to see what other options are available for your trip.

While there’s always some risk involved when it comes to adventure travel, booking an organised trekking tour is generally one of the safest ways to visit these epic destinations. You’ll be accompanied by an expert guide who’s done it all before and knows how to keep you safe while you explore some of the world’s most beautiful and remote locations. If you have any specific concerns or questions about the trekking trips above, ask your Travel Expert for more information.

The best time for trekking depends on where you’re going, but in most cases the dry season is a clear winner for pretty obvious reasons! Some hikes aren’t possible all year round (for example, the Inca Trail is closed every February for maintenance) and many aren’t safe during the wet season or after heavy snowfall even if they’re technically open, so it’s important to do your research before booking. For more information and help choosing the best travel dates for your trekking holiday, talk to your Travel Expert.

In some cases, you may need special entry permits for your trekking holiday. Your tour operator will typically be able to organise this for you in advance, but it’s important to double-check before you set off to avoid any surprises when you get there!

Depending on where you’re going, visas may be required. For more specific advice on travel documents and entry requirements, talk to your Travel Expert but keep in mind this is the individual responsibility of travellers and conditions can change suddenly. We recommend referring to the Australian Government's Smartraveller website for the latest updates and Sherpa for guidance on visa requirements, as well as the relevant local government websites. General information on visas and passports is also available in our Help Centre.

Physical preparations will vary, but it’s a good idea to focus on cardio and endurance training so you’re all set for those long days of walking. A few practice hikes with a heavy backpack won't go astray either. Preparing for high-altitude treks can be a little more challenging since you probably don’t have access to a 5,000+ metre mountain for your training! One of the best things you can do is give yourself time to acclimatise. This means arriving a few days early if you can and taking the ascent slowly.
