With a capacity of over 50,000, the Colosseum during 70 to 80 AD could fill up in just 10 minutes and is considered one of the greatest works of Roman architecture. A visit to this ancient structure is a necessary pilgrimage for any history buff, and an ideal starting point to take in the Roman remains, the Forum, and Pantheon.
The Pantheon, built by Hadrian around 120AD, holds the tomb of Italy's first king, and the revered artist Raphael. An architectural wonder of geometry, the diameter of the dome is equal to the height of the building, giving it the capacity to hold a perfect sphere. Near the Colosseum you can also visit excavations and museums on Palatine Hill, home to Roman emperors and aristocrats, and see the original height of Rome.
Take an audience with the Pope at the Vatican on Wednesday mornings. Walk through St. Peter's Basilica; admire Michelangelo's frescoes, including the Sistine Chapel, amongst the Vatican Museums; a city of churches, where St. Peter's Basilica outshines them all.
