Frequently asked questions

Katherine is as beautiful as it is rugged, so we recommend doing some specific research once you’ve got your dates and proposed itinerary. As a guide, aim for comfortable and lightweight clothing and sturdy footwear. Staying hydrated is key, so be sure to pack your refillable bottle. Throw in a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen to protect against the sun’s harmful rays and you are off to a good start.

Katherine’s biggest (and most popular) attraction is the stunning Nitmiluk Gorge (also known as Katherine Gorge). Featuring over a dozen sandstone cliffs, there are plenty of opportunities for hiking, kayaking, canoeing and swimming. To the south of Katherine you’ll find Cutta Cutta Caves Nature Park, an incredible underground network of limestone caves, and slightly further south still is Mataranka Hot Springs, a natural thermal pool featuring crystal-clear water. Leliyn (Edith Falls) is also a popular pit-stop for visitors to Katherine. Of course, no trip to Katherine is complete without learning about life on an Australian cattle station.

The best time to visit is during the dry season, which runs from May to September. During this time, the weather is sunny and dry, with low humidity and comfortable temperatures ranging from 20 to 30 degrees Celsius. This makes it an ideal time to explore the nearby natural attractions, such as Katherine Gorge, Nitmiluk National Park, and Leliyn (Edith Falls) and participate in outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, canoeing, and swimming. In contrast, the wet season (October to April) can be hot, humid and prone to heavy rainfall, which can lead to flooding and the closure of certain attractions and roads, so best to skip Katherine during this time.

Kayak along Katherine Gorge, soak in the hot springs, learn about Indigenous culture, check out the Katherine Art Gallery, get a bird’s eye view on a scenic flight, marvel at rock-art sites, camp under the stars, find waterfalls, ride a horse, the list is endless!
