Escape to this unspoilt island
Freedom isn’t a state of mind, it’s an island. A short trip across the water from the mainland, but a million miles away. As you step off the SeaLink ferry in beautiful Penneshaw, it’s almost impossible not to relax. Kangaroo Island is the perfect place to disconnect from the world and reconnect with what and who is truly important to you.
If a show is what you want, a show is what you’ll get. Kangaroo Island’s scenery is breathtaking. Travel through bushland, to beaches, over rolling hills and around rocky cliffs. Wildlife abounds on Kangaroo Island, which is known as a zoo without fences, and yes, you'll see lots of kangaroos too. The unique Kangaroo Island kangaroo is similar to the eastern grey, but has brown soft fur and big brown eyes. Its home to plenty of other native animals including rare birds, tammar wallabies, short-beaked echidnas and lots and lots of koalas. The amazing wildlife continues underwater with unique marine life, fish and leafy sea dragons. Stand on the shore in the cooler months and watch migrating southern right whales and their calves and walk among a colony of sea lions at Seal Bay Conservational Park.
More than one third of the island is dedicated to national and conservation parks. Flinders Chase National Park is the biggest, taking up most of Kangaroo Island’s western side. Here you'll find the wind-sculpted Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch. The best way to explore this end of the island is on tour. Soothe your palate while filling your senses with remarkable ocean views, rolling hills and natural bushland. Kangaroo Island Spirits is South Australia's only boutique distillery, producing delicious liqueurs and cordials. They make Limoncello with organic lemons, and their Wild Gin with native juniper is simply amazing.
Savour seafood plucked daily from the sea. Crack open sweet, freshwater crayfish or feast on spit-roasted organic lamb. Kangaroo Island’s artisan producers add to the bounty, with Ligurian honey straight from the hive and handcrafted sheep’s milk cheese. Time to book your freedom escape.
