New Zealand South Island Itinerary: The Perfect 5-Day Road Trip From Australia

A New Zealand South Island itinerary over 5 days is one of the most rewarding road trips Australians can take — and with direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide into Christchurch and Queenstown, it's also one of the most accessible. In five days, you can stand before turquoise lakes, drive through mountain passes that look like desktop wallpaper, and cruise the misty waters of Milford Sound. Here's exactly how to do it.

Before You Go: Australian Essentials

  • NZETA: Australian citizens travelling on an Australian passport do not require a visa, but do need to apply for a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) online before travel. The fee is NZD 17. Apply at immigration.govt.nz
  • Flights: Direct services connect Sydney (SYD), Melbourne (MEL), Brisbane (BNE) and Adelaide (ADL) to Christchurch (CHC) and Queenstown (ZQN). Flight time from Sydney is approximately 3 hours.
  • Rental car: Collect your rental car in Christchurch and drop it off in Queenstown for a one-way road trip that avoids backtracking.
  • Currency: New Zealand uses the NZD. The Australian dollar generally exchanges at a small discount — budget slightly more than you would at home for similar items.
  • Season: Visiting in winter (June–September)? Queenstown and Wanaka's ski fields will be in full swing. Visiting in summer (December–February)? Expect long daylight hours and ideal conditions for Milford Sound kayaking and Queenstown adventure activities.

Day 2: Christchurch to Lake Tekapo (~3 hours driving)

Head south-west from Christchurch into the Mackenzie Basin. The drive itself is part of the experience — open plains, braided rivers, and the Southern Alps slowly rising ahead of you.

  • Stop at the Church of the Good Shepherd — the postcard image of the South Island. Visit early morning or evening to avoid the worst of the crowds.
  • Walk to the Tekapo Dog Statue nearby for lake views with fewer visitors.
  • Book a night-sky stargazing tour if visiting in clear conditions — the Mackenzie Basin is one of the world's largest Dark Sky Reserves.
  • In summer, the lupins along the lakeside bloom in spectacular pink, purple and red from November to January.
  • In winter, the mountains surrounding Lake Tekapo are blanketed in snow — a stunning backdrop for the turquoise lake.

Stay: Lake Tekapo has a small selection of lodges and holiday parks. Book ahead — accommodation is limited and fills quickly.

Day 3: Lake Tekapo to Queenstown via Wanaka (~4.5 hours with stops)

This is the day the South Island truly shows off. Leave Lake Tekapo and drive south-west via Twizel and the Lindis Pass toward Wanaka — allow the day to breathe, as you'll want to stop often.

  • Wanaka: Stop for lunch and explore the lakeside town. Wanaka Tree (the lone willow growing from the lake) is a short walk from the foreshore.
  • In winter, Cardrona Alpine Resort is easily accessible from Wanaka — one of New Zealand's best ski areas, with terrain for all levels.
  • Roy's Peak Track (if time and fitness allow) — a 16km return hike with one of the most photographed views in New Zealand. Allow 5–6 hours. Not suitable if there's been recent snowfall without appropriate gear.
  • Continue to Queenstown (approx. 1 hour from Wanaka) and check in to your accommodation.
  • Dinner in Queenstown: the dining scene is excellent — Fergburger for the famous burger, or explore the waterfront restaurants along Marine Parade.

Stay: Queenstown offers the widest range of accommodation on the South Island, from backpacker hostels to luxury lodges. Mid-range options from NZD 200 per night.

Day 4: Milford Sound Day Trip

Milford Sound (Piopiotahi) is one of the world's most extraordinary natural landscapes. The drive from Queenstown takes approximately 3.5 hours each way through Fiordland National Park — the journey through the Homer Tunnel and into the fiord valley is itself spectacular.

  • Book a cruise on the Sound — most depart from Milford Sound township. Choose between 1.5 to 2-hour scenic cruises and longer kayaking experiences.
  • Waterfalls cascade down sheer cliff faces year-round, but are at their most dramatic after rain.
  • Alternatively, fly into Milford Sound via scenic flight from Queenstown — this provides a completely different (and equally stunning) perspective over the Fiordland peaks.
  • Book this day trip well in advance — particularly in summer, boats fill up quickly.

Note: Doubtful Sound is a less-visited alternative accessible via a separate day trip from Te Anau. Consider this if you want a quieter Fiordland experience.

Day 5: Queenstown & Departure

Your final morning in Queenstown. If your flight departs in the afternoon, use the morning well.

  • Take the Skyline Gondola for panoramic views over Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables mountain range — a worthy final view.
  • Bungee jumping, jet boating, or skydiving if adventure activities are on your list — Queenstown is the adrenaline capital of New Zealand.
  • Explore Arrowtown, a 25-minute drive from Queenstown — a beautifully preserved gold-rush-era town surrounded by autumn foliage (March–May).
  • Allow at least 90 minutes to return the rental car and get through Queenstown Airport check-in.

Conclusion

Five days is the perfect amount of time to experience the South Island's greatest hits without rushing. The self-drive format gives you the freedom to stop when something catches your eye — and on the South Island, something always does.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best 5-day South Island New Zealand itinerary?

The classic 5-day South Island itinerary for Australians starts in Christchurch, drives south to Lake Tekapo, continues through the Mackenzie Basin to Queenstown via Wanaka, includes a day trip to Milford Sound or a Doubtful Sound cruise, and ends with a final day exploring Queenstown before flying home. Picking up a rental car in Christchurch gives you the most flexibility.

Is 5 days enough for the New Zealand South Island?

Five days is enough to see the South Island's highlights — Lake Tekapo, Wanaka, Queenstown and Milford Sound — if you're strategic with your driving. You won't cover everything, but a focused self-drive itinerary hitting the key stops is very achievable and deeply rewarding.

How do Australians get to the South Island of New Zealand?

Direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth connect to Christchurch (CHC) and Queenstown (ZQN). Flight time from Sydney is around three hours. Flying into Christchurch and out of Queenstown is a popular one-way itinerary that eliminates backtracking.

What is the best time of year to visit the New Zealand South Island?

For Australians escaping winter, June to August is prime time — ski season in Queenstown and Wanaka is in full swing with Cardrona and Coronet Peak at their best. Summer (December to February) offers longer days and ideal conditions for Milford Sound kayaking and Queenstown adventure activities. Shoulder seasons (March–May, September–October) offer lower prices and fewer crowds.

Do I need a rental car for a South Island New Zealand itinerary?

A rental car is highly recommended. The South Island's best scenery unfolds along regional highways and scenic routes between towns — many of which are not accessible by public transport. Picking up in Christchurch and dropping off in Queenstown is a popular and cost-effective option with most rental companies.
