Highlights of Africa South and Central
If adventure, culture and history appeal to your senses then South Africa will not disappoint. But if cosmopolitan Cape Town or bustling Durban are not what you're after, the idyllic island nations of Mauritius and Seychelles offer ample opportunities to kick back and relax.
A few of the highlights of cruising South Africa and the Indian Ocean
- Cape Town needs little introduction as one of the jewels of southern Africa. This sun-soaked city on South Africa's south-west coast is home to the stunning Table Bay and most cruise liners dock in the harbour right by the heart of the city. Many cruise lines also make Port Elizabeth a port of call and the city boasts kilometres of golden beaches and a warm year-round climate. Durban is another popular destination and is home to the 'Golden Mile,' where visitors can enjoy warm Indian Ocean beaches by day and some of the city's liveliest nightclubs once the sun goes down.
- A small speck in the vast Indian Ocean, the picturesque island of Mauritius boasts crystal clear ocean waters fringed by white sandy beaches. It's the ideal place to relax but if you're after some excitement there's still plenty to see and do. Stroll down to Grand Bay to enjoy some of the country's best clubs and restaurants, or for an insight into the local history you can visit the Balaclava Ruins. Ships dock in the capital Port Louis close to the city centre, meaning many of the country's most popular tourist attractions are within easy reach.
- Many of the Seychelles' 115 islands are uninhabited but those that are populated offer some stunning sights. Disembark at the Port of Victoria and head straight to one of the Seychelles' many unspoiled beaches. The 2-hour hike from Beau Vallon to Anse Major is especially scenic and offers the chance to enjoy some of the world's most beautiful beaches all to yourself.
Cruises based out of South Africa, cruises ex the UK and World Cruises all operate in the October to April period.
