The Hubbard Glacier stretches 122 kilometres from the Canadian province of Yukon into Alaska and was named in 1980 after the first president of the National Geographic Society, Gardiner G. Hubbard. The glacier boasts a stunning translucent blue hue and continues to move forward daily at an incredible pace – scientists estimate that it takes around 400 years for the ice to move through the entire length of the glacier.
Sights to See
Visitors to the region view the glacier from the comfort and safety of their cruise liner or as a day trip from Juneau. If you appreciate glaciers also consider investigating other Alaskan glaciers including Bear Glacier, Riggs Glacier and the Mendenhall Glacier, which lies 19 kilometres from Juneau.
