After being claimed by the United States, Yerba Buena was renamed as San Francisco in 1847. The following California gold rush swelled the population and generated significant wealth for the fledgling city. The iconic cable cars were first installed in 1873 and the Golden Gate Bridge was completed in 1937. Today San Francisco is a flourishing melting pot of cosmopolitan chic - a significant city-break destination for visitors keen to bask in the glow of the golden gates.
The city's port is conveniently located in downtown San Francisco.
Sights to See
Admire the iconic Golden Gate Bridge from a far before crossing on foot. Take a trip on the cable car to Lombard Street, a thoroughfare known for its incredible steepness and eight hairpin turns. Bordering the Alamo Square Park are the Painted Ladies, a row of Victorian houses painted to perfection. Also check out the sea lions sun baking near Fisherman's Wharf, enjoy yum cha in Chinatown or wander down to the Castro, the centre of the city's gay and lesbian community.
What's for Lunch
