White sandy beaches, family-friendly resorts and lush rainforests
Its official name 'Langkawi, the Jewel of Kedah', seems apt and UNESCO acknowledged its natural beauty in 2007 too, declaring it a geopark.
Island hopping, tours of caves and mangroves, and all watersports are popular. The main island – Pulau Langkawi – is the only one with any real settlement, and many of the island's resorts boast their own private beach. Pantai Cenang Beach is a 2-kilometre strip enjoyed by visitors and locals alike. (The best range of budget accommodation is a short walk from here too.) While you're on the main island, take a cable car to the top of Gunung Matchinchang to truly appreciate the area.
When you're hungry from being idle, or diving or exploring, Langkawi cuisine serves an enticing blend of Malaysian and Thai flavours. The town of Kuah will give you the most dining options and this is also the place to make the most of duty-free shopping. The temperate climate here means a holiday in Langkawi is comfortable year-round, so it's ready when you are.
