The oldest and most historic district of Manila is Intramuros, the heart of Spanish Manila. The area is also known as Ciudad Murada or Walled City because of the almost three mile stretch of stone walls and fortifications that protected the city from attack. The foundations of Intramuros were laid in 1571 by the Spanish conquistador Miguel López de Legazpi.
Today the region offers visitors the opportunity of exploring the preserved history of the city. As a former military headquarters, Fort Santiago was once a key piece of protection for the city. Other significant structures worthy of exploration include the Postigo del Palacio, the Puerta de Santa Lucia and the Baluarte de San Diego.
In true Spanish style, there are several notable plazas that are a great place to appreciate bygone times including Plaza de Roma, Plazuela de Santa Isabel and Plaza Moriones.
