Connecting Luwan and Pudong, the Lupu Bridge at a span of 550 metres is the world's second-longest arch bridge. The bridge took 3 years to construct and cost US$302 million. The name of the bridge is derived from the two districts it connects and was constructed to ease traffic congestion ahead of the 2010 Expo and indeed formed the impressive western boundary of the Expo site. Today the bridge remains a popular tourist attraction with an observation deck affording incredible views of the city.
The heart of Shanghai is the People's Square, a large open expanse adjacent to Nanjing Road. The site itself used to be a horse racing course, however after gambling was outlawed by the Communist Party, the Government converted the space into a public square. Today the square is bordered by the Shanghai Grand Theatre, Shanghai Museum and the Shanghai Art Museum.
The People's Square boasts several records including the tallest building in Asia between 1934 and 1952 with the Park Hotel Shanghai and the tallest building in the city between 1987 and 1990 with the Jinjiang Tower.
