Steeped in history, the 3,000-year-old city of Xian is undoubtedly the origin of Chinese civilisation, previously serving as China's capital city for several dynasties. Remnants of the city’s heritage are everywhere, from the ancient Xian City Wall, built in the Tang Dynasty, to the world-famous Terracotta Warriors from the Qin Dynasty – still one of the most momentous archaeological excavations. One of the best ways to ensure you visit the city’s highlights is by joining a tour, with a range of options to suit every style of traveller.

Don’t miss these Xian attractions

  • The Terracotta Warriors
  • Walking tours of the city
  • City wall of Xian
  • Climbing Mt Huashan
  • Visiting the Tomb of Emperor Jingdi

The eternal city

There is so much to discover in the city of Xian, and a great way to explore is on a walking and cycling tour. Cycle around the ancient Xian City Wall with a small tour group and take in the scenic views. Explore the World Heritage-listed Terracotta Warriors Museum on foot and visit the fascinating exhibitions and artefacts.

There are a range of private and group walking tours on offer, which you can do during the day or at night. Join a guided tour and visit the Muslim Quarter to learn about the surrounding historic landmarks. You can also make a trip to the bustling Beiyuanmen Muslim Market and sample delicious local delicacies.

Hiking Mount Huashan

The imposing Mount Huashan is located 120 kilometres outside of Xian and is known to have one of the most dangerous hiking trails in the world. Those seeking an adrenalin-pumping adventure can trek the sacred mountain, which has five separate peaks. Hiking tours can go for a few hours, with extended trips taking up to two days.

Night hiking is a great option, allowing you to reach the East Peak in time for sunrise; however, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views at every point of the trek. Visit ancient temples along the way and attempt the famous Changkong Zhandao sky plank walk. Those looking for a less strenuous experience can take the cable car.
