Darwin is the natural starting point for many guided tours, including trips to Kakadu National Park, Litchfield National Park and Katherine Gorge. Tours through Kakadu and Litchfield offer an opportunity like no other to explore this ancient land and its abundant wildlife, Indigenous heritage sites and beautiful gorges.
Minibus day trips are available, as are tours from the air – perhaps the most sensible way to explore vast tracts of the Northern Territory. Four-wheel drive tours are an exciting way to cover plenty of ground and experience the unique natural environment first hand. Such tours accommodate any budget and range from two to 15 days – camp in high-end luxury or stretch out in a swag beneath the stars for a genuine Australian experience.
Uluru is calling
Tours to the Northern Territory’s outback heart Uluṟu – formerly known as Ayers Rock – are now more versatile than ever. Take a thrilling camel safari across the red sands and step out of your comfort zone. Plenty of other tours depart regularly from either Darwin or Alice Springs, with trips varying between day trips to multi-stop week-long tours.
Many expeditions of Uluru include guided walks to Mutitjulu Waterhole, where you will view ancient Aboriginal rock paintings. Not far from Uluru is Kata Tjuta, otherwise known as the Olgas. You can hike around the soaring rock domes during the day and admire the ochre-glow at sunrise or sunset.
